Commitment

Health, safety and environmental stewardship are integrated into every aspect of our business at NAL. We all play a part in ensuring NAL's Health, Safety and Environment Management System proactively protects people, the public and the natural environment. NAL's management has a strong and proven commitment to foster a safe and environmentally-friendly workplace. NAL subscribes to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) Responsible Canadian Energy (RCE) Program. RCE is the evolution of CAPP’s long-standing Stewardship Program.

Our track record speaks for itself. NAL has achieved Platinum-level status in stewardship reporting since 2003 and has worked hard to meet or exceed regulatory standards, to stay connected with the communities where we operate, and to actively resolve issues as they arise.

Improvement

NAL establishes priorities, measures system performance and implements improvement opportunities on an annual and ongoing basis. A compelling safety culture and excellent injury prevention record has propelled NAL to become a safety leader in the oil and gas industry.

NAL believes protecting our people and the natural environment requires the pre-project assessment of the potential impact of our activities, measuring our impact and utilizing the most current technology.
NAL closely monitors greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with the objective to manage and ultimately reduce emissions. The Company’s GHG index has generally been lower than the CAPP industry benchmark.

Fresh water and water quality is important to NAL. Fresh water is a precious resource and its increasing scarcity is a growing concern to a wide-range of industry stakeholders. This is why NAL proactively strives to preserve water quality and reduce the quantity of our consumption throughout our operations. In 2006, a water well testing policy was developed to ensure that landowners around our facilities are not impacted by our activities. We also work with industry groups such as the CAPP Water Task Group, which enables NAL to have input into policies and decisions around usage and quality.

Accountability

NAL works with industry associations such as the CAPP National Air Issues Committee and the Parkland Airshed Management Zone Association (PAMZ) to aid in the development of policies governing air emissions and overall air quality.

Reclamation and Remediation

NAL strives to minimize our environmental footprint in all of our activities— from our office recycling program to initiatives aimed at reducing our greenhouse gas production. NAL’s environmental professionals are involved in every aspect of our work and help to identify areas where we can improve our environmental performance.

NAL’s commitment to the environment includes minimizing our impact on the land, air and water during production; leaving the land in the same or better condition than we found it; and working with landowners and other stakeholders to make sure environmental concerns are addressed. We strive to reduce our impact through an intensive preventative maintenance program. If spills do happen, NAL responds immediately to mitigate the environmental effects and to fully clean up any products released to the environment. Over the past decade, we have taken steps towards reducing our greenhouse gas output, including: the addition of remote monitoring equipment to reduce the driving required by our personnel, an annual testing and repair program for fugitive emissions and installation of vapour recovery systems at certain sites. Our commitment to the environment also includes restoring sites affected by historical oilfield operations and ensuring the safety and health of those using the land. Each year we have an extensive program to reclaim sites that are no longer in production, and to investigate and remediate spills or other incidents that happened in the past. NAL uses a risk-based approach to ensure that all environmental issues are dealt with in a timely manner.

Awards & Nominations

NAL and the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) were selected as co-nominees for the new Collaborative Trendsetter category of the 2019 Global Petroleum Show (GPS) Awards. NAL and SRC have collaborated to reduce emissions and produce clean energy—specifically to screen and identify field-actionable and economic technologies that could reduce methane emissions from NAL’s tank-supported operations.
